Berhampur: In a significant police operation, nine individuals were apprehended in Ganjam district, Odisha, on charges of possessing illegal firearms and ammunition, as reported by local authorities on Tuesday.
The arrests occurred late Monday night during a targeted initiative by the district police aimed at curbing criminal activities.
According to Superintendent of Police Subhendu Kumar Patra, the police acted on a tip-off and conducted a raid in the Jilundi area. Upon noticing the police presence, several suspects attempted to escape, but nine were captured following a pursuit.
During the subsequent search, law enforcement officials discovered five homemade pistols, two toy pistols, a sword, and 15 rounds of live ammunition in their possession.
In the past month, a total of 60 arrests have been made in the Ganjam and Berhampur police districts for illegal firearm possession, officials noted.
Authorities reported the seizure of 36 homemade pistols and over 120 rounds of ammunition in Ganjam, while Berhampur saw the confiscation of six pistols and 12 rounds.
Initial investigations suggest that the firearms were manufactured in Munger, Bihar.
